Sustainable Alligator Hunting in Florida
Florida’s alligator season is in full swing, and I’m excited to share a recent hunt with you. This time, I’m joined by the legendary Warren Sapp, a seasoned hunter who’s eager to experience alligator hunting for the first time.

Every year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issues a limited number of alligator tags through a lottery system. This regulated hunt helps maintain a healthy alligator population, which benefits the entire ecosystem. It’s not just about the thrill of the hunt; it’s about responsible resource management.
Traditional Techniques: Airboat and Harpoon
With water levels on the low side, we opted for a traditional hunting method – running down gators in an airboat and harpooning them. This technique requires both skill and experience, qualities my friend Brad Walpole possesses in abundance. Brad is a local legend known for his one-man-show gator hunting: driving the airboat, wielding the harpoon, and ultimately helping clients land their trophies.
Nighttime Advantage
As daylight fades, our chances of success increase. Larger gators become more active at night, making them easier to spot. With the custom LED lights on Brad’s airboat cutting through the darkness, we scan the water for signs of movement.
The action is fast-paced. Brad’s expert eyes spot a gator before I even know it’s there. A clean throw of the harpoon, and the battle begins. Warren takes the lead, skillfully maneuvering the boat as the gator fights back. After a tense struggle, the gator is subdued, and the bang stick finishes the job.

We landed a magnificent bull gator, a true testament to Florida’s thriving ecosystem. It’s a reminder that responsible hunting contributes to a healthy balance.
